Letters, words, and sentences are used to build social contracts–tacit agreements that shape power relations on the public sphere. Language is not build in consensus, it is forged and configured by power, and more importantly, applied by it in the form of laws, discourses, and political statements. Performance as Repair, a program organized by Se habla español, explored the practice of two Latin American artists – Gina Goico and Iván Sikic. Both artists have researched language in combination with performance, as a way to address the broken social contracts in search of restoring agency, foster healing, and mending the social fabric. Performance as Repair presented a live performance, a screening, and a talk with the artists to engage in a conversation about how words have a performative role in our society, how they can be used to combat the imposition of power, and play an essential part in activism, denouncement, inclusion, and policy making. The event opened a discussion on the potential of art as a mending force.
Paul Cannon is a San Diego Native belonging to the Kumeyaay-Ipai people residing on the San Pasqual Reservation. Cannon is an honored Native Americana songwriter/performer who is recognized for being a healer for the indigenous peoples. In 2017, Cannon and his wife Lacey Cannon founded Indigenous Regeneration, an educational farm center aimed towards educating the local Native community on: food sovereignty, sustainable eco-home development, regenerative agriculture, holistic living, survival skills, and many more ancient practices that will inspire true indigenous sovereignty.
Gina Goico is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and activist. Her work focuses on identity and womanhood in the Dominican Republic and its diasporas, the self, community, and healing. She has worked alongside grassroots organizations in the Dominican Republic for social justice and political accountability, and with nonprofits in NYC, making art accessible to underserved children and youth. She holds an AAS in Fine Arts and Illustration from Altos de Chavon the School of Design and a BFA from Parsons. Goico lives in The Bronx and works all across NYC.
Iván Sikic is a conceptual artist who explores social and political structures and conflicts through durational performance, public activations, installation, and photography. He has presented work and attended residencies in the USA, Latin America, Australia and Europe. His work has been written about widely in mediums like Artishock (Chile), The Creators Project, Artnet News, VICE Colombia (Colombia), Fast Company (USA), and The Huffington Post (USA), amongst others. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
Letras, palabras, y oraciones se usan para crear contratos sociales, acuerdos tácitos que dan forma a las relaciones de poder en la esfera pública. El lenguaje no se construye en consenso, está forjado y configurado por el poder y, ante todo, aplicado en forma de leyes, discursos y declaraciones políticas. Performance as Repair, un programa organizado por Se habla español, exploró la práctica de dos artistas Latinoamericanos, Gina Goico e Iván Sikic. Ambos artistas investigan la relación entre lenguaje y performance, como una forma de actuar ante contratos sociales incumplidos con el fin de restaurar la agencia, fomentar la reparación y el tejido social. Performance as Repair presentó un performance en vivo, una proyección de video y una charla con los artistas para entablar una conversación sobre cómo las palabras tienen un rol performativo en nuestra sociedad, cómo pueden combatir la imposición de poder y cómo juegan un rol esencial en el activismo, la denuncia, la inclusión, y la creación de políticas públicas. El evento abrió una discusión sobre el potencial del arte como fuerza reparadora.
Paul Cannon nació en San Diego y pertenece a los Kumeyaay-Ipai. Reside en la Reserva San Pasqual. Cannon es un honrado compositor e intérprete nativo norteamericano reconocido por ser un sanador para los pueblos indígenas. En el 2017 Canon y su esposa Lacey Cannon fundaron Indigenous Regeneration, un centro agrícola educativo destinado a educar a la comunidad nativa sobre: soberanía alimentaria, desarrollo sostenible de viviendas ecológicas, agricultura regenerativa, vida holística, habilidades de supervivencia y muchas más prácticas antiguas que inspirarán la verdadera soberanía indígena.
Gina Goico es una artista interdisciplinaria, educadora y activista. Su trabajo se enfoca en la identidad y la feminidad en la República Dominicana y sus diásporas, el ser, la comunidad y la reparación. Ha trabajado junto a organizaciones grassroots en la República Doiminicana para la justicia social y la responsabilidad política, y con organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro en Nueva York, haciendo el arte accesible para los niños y jóvenes. Tiene un AAZ in Bellas Artes e Ilustración de Altos de Chavon, School of Design y un BFA de Parsons. Goico vive en el Bronx y trabaja en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Iván Sikic es un artista conceptual que explora estructuras sociales y políticas y conflictos a través de performances duracionales, activaciones públicas, instalación y fotografía. Ha presentado su obra y ha participado de residencias en EE.UU., Latinoamérica, Australia y Europa. Su obra ha sido reseñada en varios medios como Artishock (Chile), The Creators Project, Artnet News, VICE Colombia (Colombia), Fast Company, The Huffington Post (USA), entre otros. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Brooklyn.
