Desertx 2019
Desert X is produced by the desert biennial, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, conceived to produce recurring international contemporary art exhibitions that activate desert locations through site-specific installations by acclaimed international artists. Its guiding purposes and principles include presenting public exhibitions of art that respond meaningfully to the conditions of desert locations, the environment and indigenous communities; promoting cultural exchange and education programs that foster dialogue and understanding among cultures and communities about shared artistic, historical, and societal issues; and providing an accessible platform for artists from around the world to address ecological, cultural, spiritual, and other existential themes.
“Desert X was a site-specific show that took place in the spring of 2017 and 2019. Artists from different parts of the world were invited to make work that responds to the unique conditions of Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley. The desert of Desert X is the blank canvas upon which contemporary artists – like the writers, architects, musicians and other before them – were invited to project their vision and to create of the extraordinary natural and social history around them objects and experiences that reflect upon the matchless spectacle of the geologic epic, the radical abstraction of the surroundings and the singular incursions of man into the seemingly barren landscape. Unique in that it takes the landscape itself as its exhibition space, Desert X offers the opportunity to experience the familiar and the unknown through the eyes of others. If the desert is indeed God without man, then Desert X is art without constraint.”

DX19 es producido por la bienal del Desert X, una organización benéfica 501(c)3, concebida para producir exposiciones de arte contemporáneo internacional y de carácter periódico, que activan las ubicaciones del desierto mediante instalaciones en lugares específicos realizadas por aclamados artistas internacionales. Entre sus propósitos y objetivos figuran la presentación de exposiciones públicas de arte que respondan de manera significativa a las condiciones de los lugares del desierto, el medio ambiente y las comunidades indígenas; la promoción de programas de intercambio cultural y educación que fomenten el diálogo y la comprensión entre las culturas y las comunidades sobre cuestiones artísticas, históricas y sociales compartidas; y la provisión de una plataforma accesible para que los artistas de todo el mundo aborden temas ecológicos, culturales, espirituales y otros temas existenciales.
Desert X es una muestra específica que tuvo lugar en la primavera de 2017 y 2019 que tendrá continuidad en 2021. En ellas, artistas de diferentes partes del mundo fueron invitados a hacer obras que respondieran a las condiciones únicas de Palm Springs y del Valle de Coachella que lo rodea. El desierto del Desert X es el lienzo en blanco sobre el que se invitó a artistas contemporáneos -como los escritores, arquitectos, músicos y otros antes que ellos- a proyectar su visión y a crear, a partir de la extraordinaria historia natural y social que les rodea, objetos y experiencias que reflejen el incomparable espectáculo de la épica geológica, la abstracción radical del entorno y las singulares incursiones del hombre en el paisaje aparentemente estéril. Único en el sentido de que toma el propio paisaje como su espacio de exposición, Desert X ofrece la oportunidad de experimentar lo familiar y lo desconocido a través de los ojos de los demás. Si el desierto se equipara a Dios sin el hombre, entonces el Desert X es el arte sin restricciones”.
