Vessels is an installation about migration that explores the idea of human beings as receptacles transporting cultural backgrounds across the world.
Although human beings have migrated extensively along history, migrants have always been considered a minority on seeking of adaptation, and it has been historically understood and accepted, that the figure of the migrant is the one expected to adapt to their new environment.
Today, due to globalization, and many political intentions, adaptation seems to occur, in both directions. Actual societies are trying to adapt themselves to newcomers through the use of language, or other visual expressions. One can now read traffic or food signs in almost three different languages in Madrid, eat Pakistani food in Paris, or listen to Chinese Folk songs being played in the subway of New York City.
The acceleration of these fusions of cultural heritages and ethnicities challenges ideas and concepts like national identities. Those preconceived elements, such as particular customs, and traditions that used to define geopolitical entities, are now being called into question.
The artists, Ignacio Serrano, and Xiao Hua Yang have selected a variety of signs, ads, clothing, alphabets, food, and artistic activities, as some of the most representative visual expression found in different neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey. These animations, are representations of accelerated merged multiculturalism, in which many different traditions coexist in the same shared space. Is in this context, inherited facial features or physical appearance are no longer a factor to define a cultural identity.
Ignacio Serrano is an illustrator and graphic designer based in New York. After receiving a Fulbright grant in 2015, he graduated with an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts two years later. Since summer 2017, he has been working as a graphic designer and assistant for legendary designer Milton Glaser, as well as a freelance illustrator and fine artist. His illustrations have been recognized by Latin-American Illustration, Communication Arts, 3×3 Magazine and Creative Quarterly, among others.
Xiao Hua Yang is an illustrator originally from Shanghai, China, who now works and lives in New York. Recently graduated from School of Visual Arts with an MFA degree in Illustration as Visual Essay, his work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, American Illustrations, Association of Illustrators, 3×3 Magazine, Creative Quarterly, Applied Arts Magazine. My client list includes Wall Street Journal, SeatGeek, GQ China, Surf Twenty Magazine, Howler Magazine, Wissen Magazine, Elle Men Magazine, The Beast Shop.
Vessels es una instalación sobre la migración que explora la idea de los seres humanos como receptáculos que transportan los antecedentes culturales a través del mundo.
Aunque los seres humanos han migrado extensamente a lo largo de la historia, los migrantes siempre han sido considerados una minoría en busca de adaptación, y se ha entendido y aceptado históricamente que la figura del migrante es la que se espera que se adapte a su nuevo entorno.
Hoy en día, debido a la globalización, y a muchas intenciones políticas, la adaptación parece ocurrir, en ambas direcciones. Las sociedades actuales están tratando de adaptarse a los recién llegados mediante el uso del lenguaje u otras expresiones visuales. Uno puede ahora leer los carteles de tráfico o de comida en casi tres idiomas diferentes en Madrid, comer comida paquistaní en París, o escuchar canciones folclóricas chinas que se tocan en el metro de la ciudad de Nueva York.
La aceleración de estas fusiones de herencias culturales y etnias desafía ideas y conceptos como las identidades nacionales. Esos elementos preconcebidos, como las costumbres y tradiciones particulares que solían definir las entidades geopolíticas, se están cuestionando ahora.
Los artistas Ignacio Serrano y Xiao Hua Yang han seleccionado una variedad de signos, anuncios, ropa, alfabetos, alimentos y actividades artísticas, como algunas de las expresiones visuales más representativas que se encuentran en diferentes barrios de Nueva York y Nueva Jersey. Estas animaciones, son representaciones de un acelerado multiculturalismo fusionado, en el que muchas tradiciones diferentes coexisten en el mismo espacio compartido. En este contexto, los rasgos faciales heredados o la apariencia física ya no son un factor para definir una identidad cultural.
SOBRE LOS ARTISTAS:
Ignacio Serrano es un ilustrador y diseñador gráfico radicado en Nueva York. Tras recibir una beca Fulbright en 2015, se graduó con un MFA en Ilustración en la Escuela de Artes Visuales dos años después. Desde el verano de 2017, ha estado trabajando como diseñador gráfico y asistente del legendario diseñador Milton Glaser, así como ilustrador y artista plástico independiente. Sus ilustraciones han sido reconocidas por Latin-American Illustration, Communication Arts, 3×3 Magazine y Creative Quarterly, entre otros.
Xiao Hua Yang es un ilustrador originario de Shanghai, China, que ahora trabaja y vive en Nueva York. Recientemente se graduó de la Escuela de Artes Visuales con un MFA en Ilustración como Ensayo Visual, su trabajo ha sido reconocido por la Sociedad de Ilustradores, American Illustrations, Asociación de Ilustradores, 3×3 Magazine, Creative Quarterly, Applied Arts Magazine.
