Switch it on: Shift from sculpture to interactive installation, is an exhibition that features the work of three artists, Scott Ferguson, Nick Doyle and Juri Rhyu. These artists are brought together to explain the different possibilities of construction and interactive installation, each incorporating a mechanical point of view within their work.
As the title suggests, the shift from mechanical sculptures to interactive installations presents the idea that art must question the mechanical aspect on our way of thinking. Switch It On explores the challenge of conceiving the sound, light, and movement as an invitation for spectators to interact and perform. By experiencing the space that is intentionally modified to include the first person, whether the artist is present or not, the sensory experience provokes and motivates our brains to think further.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Nick Doyle is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He Holds an MFA in Sculpture from Hunter college and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. In 2014 he attended the Skowhegan school of painting and sculpture. From 2014–2017 Doyle was a resident of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s workspace program. In 2013 he was awarded the C12 emerging artist fellowship upon completion of his MFA. Solo exhibitions include “Steven” at Invisible Exports Gallery in New York (2014), “Soft Arrest” at Mrs Gallery in New York (2018), and a forthcoming solo exhibition at Steve Turner Gallery in Los Angeles(May 2019). Group exhibitions include The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Pioneer Works, Abrons Art Center, Perrotin Gallery, Nathalie Karg Gallery, and Columbia University.
Scott Ferguson (Glasgow, Scotland) is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Using photography, performance, video, sound, and sculpture he creates works that explore ideas of landscape, the mundane and otherworldliness. Scott received a BFA in Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013 and an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in 2017. Since 2012, he has been an active member of the Flinching Eye Collective whose work explores the possibilities of sound and performance. He has shown work throughout the United States and most recently performed at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
Juri Rhyu is a New-York and Seoul based Artist, Educator, and Activist. Born in South Korea, she earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and an MA in Art and Design Education from Rhode Island School of Design. After completing her degree, she worked at Solomon R. Guggenheim as a Museum Educator Assistant. Juri Rhyu creates tragicomic works on a variety of disciplines. Blurring the boundaries between contemporary art, conceptual art, and design, she believes the idea behind the work is more important than the finished art object.
Switch It On: Shift from sculpture to interactive installation [Enciéndelo: Entre la escultura y la instalación interactiva] es una exposición que presenta la obra más reciente de los artistas Scott Ferguson, Nick Doyle y Juri Rhyu, en la que introducen un punto de vista mecánico a su trabajo escultórico, mostrando así la gran variedad de posibilidades de construcción e instalación.
Como sugiere el título, el cambio de esculturas mecánicas a instalaciones interactivas presenta la idea de que el arte debe cuestionar el aspecto mecánico de nuestra forma de pensar. Switch It On explora el desafío de concebir el sonido, la luz y el movimiento como una invitación para que los espectadores interactúen y actúen. Al experimentar el espacio intencionalmente modificado para incluir al espectador en primera persona, con independencia de si el artista esté presente o no, la experiencia sensorial provoca y motiva a nuestros cerebros a pensar más.
SOBRE LOS ARTISTAS
Nick Doyle es un artista que vive y trabaja en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Tiene un MFA en Escultura Hunter College y un BFA en Artes Interdisciplinarias del Instituto de Arte de San Francisco. En 2014 asistió a la escuela de pintura y escultura Skowhegan. De 2014 a 2017, Doyle fue residente del programa de espacio de trabajo del LMCC (Consejo Cultural del Bajo Manhattan). En 2013 fue galardonado con la beca de artista emergente C12 al completar su MFA. Algunas de sus exposiciones individuales incluyen “Steven” en Invisible Exports Gallery en Nueva York (2014), “Soft Arrest” en Mrs Gallery en Nueva York (2018) y una próxima exposición individual en Steve Turner Gallery en Los Ángeles (mayo de 2019). Scott Ferguson (Glasgow, Escocia) es un artista interdisciplinar que vive y trabaja en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Utiliza la fotografía, performance, video, sonido y escultura, para crear obras que exploran ideas del paisaje y lo mundano. Scott recibió un BFA en Prácticas de Artes de Medios Interdisciplinarios de la Universidad de Colorado en 2013 y un MFA en Bellas Artes de la Escuela de Artes Visuales en 2017. Desde 2012, ha sido miembro activo del Colectivo Flinching Eye cuyo trabajo explora las posibilidades de sonido y rendimiento energético. Ha expuesto su trabajo en todo Estados Unidos y recientemente se formó parte de una exposición en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Utah.
Juri Rhyu es una artista, educadora y activista con sede en Nueva York y Seúl. Nacida en Corea del Sur, obtuvo un BFA de la Escuela de Artes Visuales de Nueva York y una maestría en Educación de Arte y Diseño de la Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island. Después de completar su título, trabajó en Solomon R. Guggenheim como Asistente de Educadora del Museo. Juri Rhyu crea obras tragicómicas en una variedad de disciplinas. Borrando los límites entre el arte contemporáneo, el arte conceptual y el diseño, cree que la idea detrás del trabajo es más importante que el objeto de arte terminado.
